According to Reuters, more than 90 percent of all audio books in Germany are being downloaded from iTunes or Amazon’s site Audible. Since Audible has entered an exclusive supply agreement with iTunes, Germany’s Federal Cartel office has decided to begin an investigation into the matter.
- The two companies have a strong position in the digital offering of audiobooks in Germany. Therefore, we feel compelled to examine the agreement between these two competitors in the audiobooks in more detail, cartel office chief Andreas Mundt said in a statement earlier today.
Accused of Building a Monopoly
The background story is that The Association of German Book Sellers in September felt that Amazon and Audible were building an audiobook monopoly, and therefore filed a complaint at the Cartel Office. The complaint states that the two dominant companies causes an unfair market for others to compete in.
Both Audible and iTunes have declined commenting the investigation in Reuter’s article.
