Facebook Messenger to Launch Ads During Q2 2016

2016-02-19 14:32

Later this spring Facebook plans to let companies advertise in the popular Messenger app, as long as they only reach out to customers who have previously made contact.

A secret document that news site TechCrunch has come across shows that Facebook has advanced plans of letting businesses advertise in its popular Messenger app.

Companies Are Encouraged to Prepare

The document, which according to TC has been sent to some of Facebook’s most prominent advertisers, says advertisement opportunities will start during the second quarter 2016. Businesses will be able to send ads to people who have previously used the app for getting in touch with a particular company. The leaked document recommends businesses to encourage people to get in touch through Messenger, so that the company can prepare for the upcoming advertisement launch.

Facebook has been reluctant to comment on the news.

- We don’t comment on rumor or speculation. That said, our aim with Messenger is to create a high quality, engaging experience for 800 million people around the world, and that includes ensuring people do not experience unwanted messages of any type, the company said to TechCrunch.

Crucial to stay close to original subject

The news site regards the comment as a confirmation of the possibility to advertise will become reality, but that it will launched in a careful manner in order to not upset any Messenger users.

It is still not clear what the ads will look like. According to the leaked document it is crucial for businesses to stay close to the subject which was brought up by the messenging customer in the first place, which could possibly mean ads will contain information of for example flash sales or campaigns for a certain product.
