Flipkart is almost always referred to as the Amazon of India. It was started by Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal who both previously had been working for Amazon.com.
The marketplace is often cited as the country's biggest online player valued at over $15 billion with gross sales of over $1 billion.
Mashable now reports that Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corp, a subsidiary of the Indian Railways, is the country's largest online marketplace, with online revenues of $3 billion last financial year. The government-owned portal sold 1.34 million tickets in a single day earlier this year.
Not Flipkart's Competitor
They are of course selling mostly e-tickets but it is notable that they have the largest online revenue in the country. A country that is expected to see an e-commerce explosion in the coming years when a larger part of the population moves online. With a population of 1.3 billion people the country is set to be the next hot spot for e-commerce.
Flipkarts main competitor is not the Indian Railways but rather the online marketplace Snapdeal. The two are fighting to become the leading e-commerce marketplace in the country. The American e-commerce giant Amazon is also investing billions of dollars in India and want to take a piece of the country's growing online sales.
