More than two months before Black Friday Disney launched its own event to create buzz for merchandise related to the film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

May the profits be with you. The 4th of September 2015 shall now be officially known as Force Friday. The day we all started to shop online for Star Wars: The Force Awakens merchandice.

The event, a brainchild signed Disney, was developed to create a buzz for toys and gadgets related to the film which premiered earlier this week, and featured the release of never-before-seen merchandice. And it seems like it went pretty well.

Third Biggest Shopping Day

According to the Adobe Digital Index, Star Wars product sales surged on Force Friday and the event became the third biggest sales day of the year for Star Wars merchandise besides Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

In an already banner year for online sales, Sony, Lego, Disney, and Electronic Arts are the top brands cashing in on Star Wars mania. Fans are opening their wallets most often for Star Wars Battlefront, Star Wars Complete Saga, Star Wars Advent Calendars, and the Star Wars Original Trilogy.

At the same time the shopping day garnered 215,000 mentions on social media, and beyond buzz, social media topics may provide a gauge for sales trends. For example, the second-most-mentioned character, BB-8, is one of the hottest selling toys this season.
