Nike´s Online Sales Grew 50 Percent in the Second Quarter

The sportswear giants early gambles on DTC, direct-to-consumer, and ecommerce are paying off.

In recent years Nike´s online sales has increased rapidly and one of the world’s largest sportswear manufacturers has set the bar up high. Nike has invested heavily in its ecommerce channels and by 2020 Nike expects web sales to generate $7 billion a year. An ambitious target, but by no means unrealistic.

During the second quarter of Fiscal 2016, that ended 30th of November, Nike grew its online sales by 50 percent compared to the same period last year, according to Internet Retailer. Nike did not report dollar figures but is expecting to make just over a billion dollars annually through its ecommerce.

China is Growing Rapidly

In the three months to November Nike launched online sales with localized e-commerce sites in Canada, Switzerland and Norway with plans to do the same in Mexico, Turkey and Chile in the next quarter. Nike also says that online sales were especially strong in China during the last quarter.

– We saw continued strong growth from our own DTC business in China, up 51% in the quarter, fueled in part by our most successful Singles Day event ever, says Trevor Edwards, president of the Nike brand.
