What was the most popular book in China during 2015 you ask? Well according to online marketplaces like Amazon, Dangdang and JD.com it was not a book you can read. It was a colouring book for adults.
Mashable reports that Scotland-based artist, and ink evangelist, Johanna Basford made the top spot on each of the above mentioned online stores with her book Secret Garden. A book that is described colourfully:
- Tumble down the rabbit hole and find yourself in an inky black-and-white wonderland. This interactive activity book takes you on a ramble through a secret garden created in beautifully detailed pen-and-ink illustrations - all waiting to be brought to life through colouring, says the book's description.
Millions of Copies Sold
And it is basically a colouring-in book for grown-ups. By August 2015 the book's publisher said that 3 million books were sold in China and Dangdang reports it had sold 1.5 million copies last year.
It is of course not only Chinese adults who like colouring, globally the book sold 6.8 million copies.
Chinese Internet users report that they find the art of colouring relaxing and they are sharing finished coloured pages online, from Secret Garden, with other fans of the art.
