Trunk Deliveries Next Big Thing in Swedish E-Commerce Mat.se delivers groceries to car trunks

Trunk Deliveries Next Big Thing in Swedish E-Commerce

2015-11-24 11:20

Tuesday morning two major Swedish businesses announced they would start to deliver goods directly to the cars of their customers through a cooperation with car brand Volvo.

Over the last few years shopping groceries online for home delivery has grown to a huge business in Sweden. Today, the online supermarket Mat.se released a new type of delivery in order to make grocery shopping even easier. The customer can now choose the alternative "delivery-to-the-car" option, and consequently will no longer have to wait at home for their delivery to arrive.

With the new delivery option Mat.se, by using a digital key, for a limited time will have access to the customer’s car. When the delivery is completed, the customer gets a text message containing a confirmation. When the customer returns to the car the delivered food will be waiting in the trunk. By using the newly developed e-commerce related iFoodbag, which is set on going global during 2016, the Mat.se guarantees the food to stay cold for up to 24 hours.

- To deliver directly to a Volvo is a natural step to simplify and develop the customer’s experience of buying food online. It is also postive from a sustainability perspective since we will be driving even shorter distances between the deliveries, said CEO of Mat.se Måns Danielson.

Wants to Make Christmas Shopping Easier

Apart from Mat.se, toy company Lekmer.se today has announced similar plans. With the approach of the Christmas shopping season, the company said it wants to make the buying experience easier and more flexible for its customers.

- It is incredibly satisfying to, together with PostNord and Volvo Cars, be able to offer this unique delivery method to our customers. At Lekmer we want to make shopping as comfortable, affordable and effective as possible for families with children, said Fredrik Palm, CEO of Lekmer.

The car-delivery option for the two businesses is for the time being only available for customers in the Goethenburg area, and they also need to drive a Volvo since the cooperation is relying on the customers to make use of the service Volvo In Car-Delivery.
