The most popular e-commerce platform in the world is basically WordPress, a free publishing platform. This is because of the immense popularity of the e-commerce plugin called WooCommerce that turns WordPress into an online store.
WooCommerce is running almost 30 percent of all e-commerce on the web according to BuiltWith's latest measurements.
Easier Than Ever
As millions of people are familiar with WordPress it is of course a much lower barrier to entry to use the publishing platform as the e-commerce store, than other specialised systems.
The Canadian e-commerce platform Shopify now makes a move to take on WooCommerce's popularity. Shopify today announced their own e-commerce plugin for the popular publishing platform.
- If you’ve been waiting for the right time to start selling on WordPress, the wait is over. Now, it’s easier than ever to add ecommerce to your WordPress website, and get all the features and security that comes with Shopify, said the company in blog post.
Shopify Ecommerce Plugin is released together with three Shopify-powered themes that will be free for download during the introductory period. The themes are made to work perfectly together with Shopify's new e-commerce plugin.
Requires a Lite Plan
While WooCommerce is free to use Shopify's plugin will require a $9 a month lite plan. The Shopify Lite Plan does however come with some additional benefits.
- For just $9 a month, you can start selling on WordPress using one of three new WordPress themes or the new Shopify Ecommerce Plugin. But you’ll also get access to much more. As part of this plan, you’ll get access to great features, like Facebook Shop, Shopify POS for iOS or Android, our app store, and 24/7 support, Shopify explains on its site.
During 2015 the platform grew its revenue by almost 100 percent to $205 million. Shopify now has over 243,000 merchants all over the world according to the company. And selling in new channels, such as WordPress and social media, is a big focus for the company.
- We are also seeing our merchants use Shopify to sell on multiple new sales channels like mobile and social, said Shopify's founder Tobi Lütke earlier this year.
