Zalando Is Set on Hitting 10 Billion Euros in Five Years

Zalando Is Set on Hitting 10 Billion Euros in Five Years

2016-03-23 20:30

Ecomony visited Zalando's headquarters in Berlin, where the company shared the plan of transforming from an e-retailer to a fashion platform.

A group of around 55 journalists from several European countries had after a special invitation travelled to Zalando’s Berlin office, in order to get some of the latest updates from the fashion e-retailer which seems to move faster for each year in business.

One of Zalando’s three CEOs, Rubin Ritter, started off the day with a report of his company’s financial situation. Zalando now has 18 million customers and 10,000 employees in 15 markets. Last year the German e-retailer summed up a revenue of 3 billion euros, a number that is set to become 10 billion euros in five or six years.

- We have grown up as a company, but that is not all. I think that the message of today is that we are not finished, and that we have a lot of things planned ahead. We want to continue to be super-entrepreneurial and we want to keep focusing on growth, said Rubin Ritter.

He was accompanied on stage by his two CEO colleagues, Robert Gentz and David Schneider, who presented the plans on transforming Zalando into a fashion platform, where the customers will have access to a huge selection of brands and inspirational content.

Inspiration from China

The business idea is that Zalando get a certain percentage when a brand sells an item on Zalandos’s platform. The idea is similar to a marketplace and is said to be inspired by Chinese e-commerce.

- We want to connect the fashion industry. We want to be the digital place where brands can drive business, we want to become their digital strategy. A place where the customers can access the latest news in fashion, said Robert Gentz.

The idea is that the brands will benefit from being able to sell more when they have access to Zalando’s giant customer base.

- An important part of this is that the inventories will be connected, so that we no longer talk about our inventory and that brand’s inventory. The next exciting step will then be to connect this with the offline world. The customer can check the inventory of a certain store and then have that delivered the same day, explained David Schneider.

Spain and UK Possible Fulfillment Locations

Rubin Ritter, David Schneider and Robert Gentz also got several questions from the audience regarding speedy deliveries, efficient return services and new fulfillment centres.

Zalando just recently opened its last fulfilment centre outside of Germany in Stradella, Italy, and new fulfilment locations might very well be on their way.

- We have previously done most of our shipping from Germany. That has been beneficial for us since many locations are not so far from here. Now we have opened a fulfilment centre in Italy and we have to wait for the response from that before we decide where the next location will be. There are possible locations in for example France, UK or Spain, said Rubin Ritter.
