German retailer Zalando has built an e-commerce empire through selling shoes and fashion online. With the fast growth of the company, however, Zalando is in need of more efficient logistics solutions.
Today Zalando cut the first symbolic sod for a new logistics centre in Lahr, South West Germany. The centre will hold a staggering 130,000 square metres (about 1.4 million square feet).
- With this new property we build our logistics network further. The new facility benefits from our experience and will offer several advantages, including an improved design and an advanced automation. These improvements and the new location will allow us to be even closer to our customers and to offer shorter delivery times, said Dr. Christoph Stark , Vice President Logistics of Zalando, to German news site MM Logistik.
Takes Over From Military Airport
The construction of the logistics centre, which in the future will provide the city of Lahr with a thousand new jobs, will start during the fall of 2016. According to France TV, the logistics central will be built where a military airport used to be.
Zalando currently has three main logistics centres in Germany, in Erfurt, Brieselang and Mönchengladbach, and the location of the planned building of course came as great news for the Baden-Württemberg region where Lahr is one of the largest cities.
- This is not only good news for all fashion enthusiasts in Baden-Württemberg, it also underlines the attractiveness of our strong site. It is also a good example of how the context of a change in industry can create new opportunities and possibilities for jobs and growth, said Peter Hofelich, Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs of Baden-Württemberg.
Zalando was founded in 2008. The company has its headquarters in Berlin but has a presence in 14 European countries.
